Meet Our Founder: Virginia Akar

Virginia Akar is the Founder and CEO of Girls Inc. of Greater Miami, an organization dedicated to empowering all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Since November 2017, Akar has played a pivotal role in delivering transformative programs and essential resources to girls aged 8 to 18 across Greater Miami.

Akar’s impressive educational background includes a Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree, which she earned cum laude from St. Thomas University School of Law in 1994. She further enhanced her expertise by obtaining a Master of Laws (LLM) in Intercultural Human Rights, graduating summa cum laude from the same institution in 2016. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Florida, completed in 1990.

Her professional career spans various roles that have shaped her into a formidable advocate for social justice and education. Prior to founding Girls Inc. of Greater Miami, Akar served as an Assistant State Attorney at the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office from 1994 to 1998. She has also held positions as a Legal Consultant for Chronofy, Inc. and as a Board Member for the City of Miami Community Relations Board.

Akar’s commitment to community service is evident in her eight-year tenure on the Board of Directors for Young Musicians Unite, a non-profit providing free after-school music programs. Her leadership extends beyond Girls Inc. of Greater Miami, as she is also a Founding Member of CHIEF, a private network designed to drive more women into positions of power and keep them there.

Throughout her career, Akar has received numerous accolades, including multiple CALI Excellence for the Future Awards in various areas of human rights law. In 2020, she was honored with the Essie Silva Community Builder Award by the United Way of Miami-Dade, recognizing her significant contributions to addressing community issues affecting different cultural and ethnic groups.
